What Makes YOU a GREAT Leader? Key Factors contributing to Successful Leadership

With the UN Theme of Generation Equal this year 2020,  What makes you a great leader is not having years of experience alone and talents but lot more things that you need to be aware of!
As you move from being a Manager to a Thought Leader,  there are few things you should be focusing on!

Be a Great Leader

1. Focus on what you want to do

It is very important we identify all things we do,  like in every single day., organize and prioritize and focus on the things that need top most attention.  You should be able to assess this at the beginning of the day so that you can make the best use of every work day.  It is very important that we do not procrastinate on things that need to be finished that day.   A good professional is one who is able to manage multiple things and still work effectively.   That is possible only when you are able to compartmentalize your day according to the priorities and stay focused to complete the tasks in hand.

2.  Are You Executive Material?

First you need to do a deep  self-introspection on what takes it to be a Senior Executive or a Thought Leader in a Organization.   It is very important that you enable yourself with upskilling/reskilling and preparing yourself to be a great Executive.     Self-assessment to identify the needs of the Top Layer of the Organization and preparing yourself to get there is key for your success.  Years of experience will not take you to the top always.  What brings more revenue and business to the Organization and what makes you the face of the leadership is what will give you the advantage to get to the top.  Getting there is not easy but not impossible if you have the confidence to be the Executive Material.  Believe in it and prepare for it and don't believe in luck

3.  Identify the mistakes that may sabotage our growth

Today in the digital era, what you are in the Social Media reflects on what you are as an individual persona.    Your thought patterns, your emotional balances, your reactions/responses, everything is under scrutiny when it comes to professional growth.    Gone are the day people rely on the resume or experiences or the ratings within the Organization.   In the rat-race to win everywhere, there is a strong competition.  So be very cautious of your social media posts, your ideologies that may reflect on your professional behavior,  your people skills that may show up in your references and also your emotional and social wellness matters a lot.

Next, it is very important that we learn from the mistakes of similar professionals around us and we do not get caught into the same situations.    Stop being overeager to explain all things for a simple reason that you cannot please everyone.   Also ask for forgiveness if you make a mistake and give a reassurance that you will not do it again, and move on.   Do not stay in one single troubled situation and whine over it for long.

4.  Be Assertive -  Learn to Say No

Always saying YES is not an acknowledgement of accepting things as they are.  Sometime , the situations may demand to say NO.  So say NO firmly when you have a reason to say so.   Do not hesitate to say no just because it may strain a relationship or give up on a business opportunity.  In the long run your firm decisions may not only benefit you but also the Organizations.  So being firm and strong and having a strong reasoning ability, analytical thinking and logical reasoning is very important for a good leadership

5.  Stop making couching statements

It is very important we keep our statements brief, precise and clear and avoid making couching statements that can be interpreted in any way others want.    Sometimes saying negative comments in couching statements may be pleasing for others, but its not always practical in a work environment.    We should not making deliberate statements that can hurt others,  mislead businesses and may impact negative work environment.      It is always advisable to have clear communication, in simple sentences that are non-ambiguous or non-provoking and hurting sentiments, triggering wrong emotions and causing confusions at work place.

6.  Self- Motivation to be a Leader

No one will make you a leader if you are not ready.  Leadership is not something that will crowned on you unless you make conscious efforts to reach there.  Make every effort to make yourself worthwhile to the change in life.   A good leader is one who takes utmost responsibility of his/ her actions as well as be ready and accountable for the actions of the team.   A leader is respected for what they do, instead of what they preach.   One thing to remember is that every leader is closely watched, followed, admired, inspiring someone or people can even have a negative impact of jealousy and fake friendships due to your position and success.   It is very important to be conscious and take success to heart and not to head resulting in egoistic behavior that will destroy your success.   Being humble, approachable and setting yourself as an example are key traits of successful leaders

7.  No need to be liked all times

You cannot please everyone every single time.  It is ok that your actions may disappoint others when their expectations are not met.   However, you have to be clear and consistent in your work,  stay focused and be sure that the outcomes are what matters in business and take every effort to achieve the objectives of the work you do.   Integrity,  Trust and Consistent Hardwork has no parallels and you can actually see these qualities in any great leader around you.    There are no short cuts to success.   As you climb the Corporate Ladder, always remember there is less crowd up there and there are chances that you can get really alone and miss the fun of being in the crowd.  But once you become a leader, your perceptions and growth mindset will make everything else insignificant and trivial.   As a Professional you will standout, when you can overcome your emotional imbalances.

8.  Stop letting people waste your time

Do not give time or attention when someone walks to your desk and calls you for a coffee..For them, it may be a break, but you may be in midst of something really important.  Learn to politely refuse niceties that no longer necessary.   Grapevine helps but unwarranted gossip doesn't.   So do not indulge in political, religious discussions and reacting to every single negative current affairs happening around us.   Without you even realizing, you will be spending more them on these non-productive activities at workplace which in turn may push you to work late into the night to finish your priorities.  It is OK to burn mid-night oil to learn new things or focus on innovation and creative things that benefit you as professional...but not for useless chatting, overloaded push of unwanted forwards on social media.  which actually may negatively impact you.   You  should be strong enough to filter out what is needed and act accordingly.

9.  You are a leader not a MOM at Workplace !

We all love our families and friends.   We all have Gods and faiths that guide our lives.  Keep that private and limited to your homes.  Do not decorate office workspace like a living room.  Having religious texts or pictures at workplace can add sentimental value to some..but in reality it is better to avoid any kind of religious marks at workplace.   Today we are talking about a much inclusive society and being equal.   We respect all faiths and we as a Nation are far more secular in the world today.  However, keeping our work places out of any of these sentiments is worth giving a thought.   And also stop feeding people at work just because you are a great cook and a great mom.   Celebrations and team bonding is always fun and productive.  But going out of the way, to keep pleasing your team is not necessary.   It is ok to be professional and productive and learn to draw a thick line between being a good friend, a great person Vs Great leader or a strong professional.    Don't bring emotions and attachments that may impact promotions, assessments,  ratings and appraisals.

10.  Miracles don't happen

Have Faith. Faith in the possibilities and power behind the veil.   But don't expect miracles to bring you success.   Rome was not built in a day.  A great leader is also not made overnight.    Being a successful leader is like a penance.   It takes years of learning,  skill enabling,  hard-work,  perseverance,  handling challenges, going through difficult situations,  handling various types of people and business situations,  focusing on innovation,  keeping your creative juices flowing to find new improvements, experience,  focusing on health,  team work,  various soft skills and then the leadership factors.

Great leaders are those who have

  •  Own Strong Personality
  •  Personal Branding and Image Management
  • Make Statements that matter to business outcomes
  • Who are ready to take the stage - for both success and failures
  • Being fearless and unafraid of your beliefs.
So go ahead,  become those leaders who are ready to be real change makers in this world.  The World need strong leaders!     Get yourself there sooner than later!   God bless!

Public Dialogue of Women's Reservation Bill @Chennai on 21 Jul 2019 - 5 MPs participated

What is Women's Reservation Bill?

The Women's Reservation Bill or The Constitution (108th Amendment) Bill, 2008, is a pending bill in the Parliament of India which propose to amend the Constitution of India to reserve 33% of all seats in the Lower house of Parliament of India, the Lok Sabha, and in all state legislative assemblies for women. The seats were proposed to be reserved in rotation and would have been determined by draw of lots in such a way that a seat would be reserved only once in three consecutive general elections.

The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on 9 March 2010.  However, the Lok Sabha never voted on the bill. The bill is still pending as it never went to the Lok Sabha.   In 1993, a constitutional amendment was passed in India that called for a random one third of village council leader, or pradhan, positions in gram panchayat to be reserved for women.

There is a long-term plan to extend this reservation to parliament and legislative assemblies. Its opponents consider this preferential treatment of women in India as discrimination against them in admissions to schools, colleges, and universities.

Why is it not presented in the floor of Parliament by Governments at Power so far.?    A Public Dailogue on the Womens Reservation Bill in Chennai on 21 Jul 2019

“You can tell the condition of the nation by looking at the status of women.” - Jawaharlal Nehru

“Na Stree Swathantryam Arhati”  - Manusmriti,   Meaning - Woman is undeserving for independence. This phrase reflects our whole attitude  towards women in our country.   Those following Manusmriti has been consistently opposing the WRB.

Ms.Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, honourable Member of Parliament in her keynote address mentioned that this is the only bill pending from passing for the longest period in the parliament.   Sharing of Power is always a question as Power represent authority to take decisions and make changes which will not be beneficial to men.  Seat sharing does have physical challenges even during the UPA government period.  Manifestos of NDA always included the WRB, however, not a single time it was passed in any session of Parliament and it is sad that this is not in agenda of the current session of the Parliament as well.

There is no response to voices of the people.  Today with 78 women MP’s, it is only 14% in Parliament.   The need for this Women’s Reservation Bill as 108th amendment to the Constitution will give assured seats/ party tickets for even contesting by the women.    Every law is a problem to someone, and women need to decide on what they want and fight for it.    With the WRB kind of legislations in place, women will be able to voice out for stricter laws against crimes on women like Rape etc.

"The Bill that every party promises and none pass,"
as DMK MP Kanimozhi eloquently said,
was my power packed Saturday at Loyola college.
VCK MP Ravikumar's words were memorable, Dalits & women have similar standing - lesser among equals by birth, and underserved in political power.
And as Thamizhachi rightly said, political power is a woman's right, not ask.
Dr Ranjana Kumari pointed out that when we say a Bill is tabled there is usually no actual document presented. This one, strangely enough, was presented as a document and torn. And again, and again! Until the ensuing ruckus stalled the bill for 9 years now.
2 MPs from the DMK, Kanimozhi & Sumathy (ThamizhachI), VCK MP Ravikumar and INC MP Dr Jayakumar accepted our demand to raise the #WomensReservationBill in this first session of Parliament.
The ball moves, nay inches towards the goal post ...
Chennai, July 20th 2019.   (Written by Tara Krishnaswamy of Politcal Shakthi)

UnSung Heroes: D. Annalakshmi - A Paraplegic Wheel Chair Marathoner who braves all odds!

D.  Annalakshmi, fondly called as Annam is a young woman who has complete zeal to life.   She is looking forward to making her own imprints in the world of marathons and shortput throw.   She is seen happily quoting Deepa Malik as inspiration and wanting to achieve something for her country.
Annalakshmi is the first woman in Chennai to complete a 10K marathon on her manual wheel chair without support.  She is now winning several accolades on her participation in several marathon events in Chennai.   She also been part of the inclusion activities and helping students of NIFT to show case their talents by bringing in inclusive clothing.

How did Annalakshmi became a Paraplegic?   Was she born disabled?

NO.  Unfortunately, the truth is that a botched up surgery made a young girl disabled for life.   In the year 2001, she complained of severe leg pain and went to doctors, who suspected a tumour in her leg.  Without proper investigations or scans, she was referred for a surgery in Government Hospital, where she believed in the doctors and went under the knife, only to be awaken to the fact that both her legs are gone paralyzed and she became paraplegic with movements lost hip down.  The GH doctors and administration panicked and destroyed all the medical reports of her surgery and records without which she could not even take up a legal battle and with a family living with poverty, she had no choice but to grieve on her destiny and lose hope

How does she manage her life?   Is her family able to help her?

Very difficult.  For almost 7-8 years post surgery,  she was completely bed ridden.  She had no hope, and felt completely lost in life.   She did not understand why this happened to her in life.  She found getting down the bed, going to washroom,  wearing clothes, managing physical changes as a woman, managing periods,  managing bedsores or possible damages to the skin, that does not heal fast without blood circulation,  life suddenly changed overnight for her.

She is blessed with absolutely dedicated parents,  who were torn by the financial challenges and meagre earnings.   Her sisters and brother stood as support physically.   However, as the years went by, the economical burden was too high with no financial support from any government or any thing.    Her family did everything possible to put her to ease.  However, the financial conditions were so tiring that left the parents in tears.    Today Annalakshmi tells us that she has to take care of her ill aged parents, where her father in on dialysis for 3 years and still works between the errands to hospital.   Mother's eyes dwelled in tears as she showed us the only picture of Annam where she was standing prior to 2001.    I felt a lump in my throat.  This girl can never stand in her life, because some doctor botched up her surgery for no reason .

What are her moments of courage, how did she defy all odds and exhibit this braveheart?

Annalakshmi did try to end her life many times.   Her failed attempts of suicide only gave her a sense  of some purpose.  Just few seconds before she lit the fire after dousing herself in kerosene, she heard a voice within her to stop.   She felt that God surely had a reason on why she have this life.  She decided to fight back the odds.

This sudden realization to life live meaningfully, made her get up with courage and start thinking at the positive side of life.   She started pursuing her education again.   Went on to do her BBA with extreme struggle and complete the same in flying colours.   She decided to tame her body to push to do the wheel chair marathon and her joy knew no bounds when she finished her first 10 kms Wheel chair marathon.   Today she works in the HR department of a company in Ambattur.

Her Achievements defying odds!

Participated 10 Km Marathon (Wheel chair) organised by the Wipro Chennai Marathon December 10 2014.
First person in India to do 10 km on wheel chair without assistance who has in injured spine.
First Prize in Shot Put Competition conducted by Tamil Nadu differently Abled Federation Charitable Trust
Won competitions AGAPA REHABILITATION CENTRE ELECTION 18TH June 2017(First Prize)
Tamil Nadu Para Sports State Championship held at Sports  Development -26th to 28th January 2018-Madurai (Discus Throw Second place) (And Javelin Throw Third place)

Tamil Nadu Differently Abled  Federation Charitable Trust 17th State Level Sports Meet for the differently Abled  Persons -10th February -2018 (100 MTS Wheel chair race  Second Prize) And (Shot Put First Prize)

Her Dreams now!

1.  To complete 21 kms in Wheel Chair Marathon
2.  To represent India in Para-Olympic Sports and win prizes in Shot Put and Javelin Throw
3.  To financial support and take care of her aged parents.
4.  Share her story and inspire atleast 2 disabled women in life to look forward and not end life.

How do I know her?

Couple of years back, she came to NIFT where my daughter Aishwarya and her friends designed a ready to wear saree for her as part of their Ability Foundation Competition.  From that day, my daughter kept on talking about this girl.  Last year, when Anna Lakshmi wanted to search for a job and take up work, she needed a mobility vehicle.    Bank loan was given for the actual cost of the vehicle, however, the accessories that need for a physically challenged person had to be done on her own cost and thats where we pitched in and got the vehicle ready by giving her the financial assistance and from there our god-daughter relationship started with her.

Her Crusade will continue:

1.  To spread the message that disability of mind is bigger than the physical disability
2.   To empower women with spinal cord injury to not give up hope and start living life positively
3.  Creating more awareness and thrive for creating more accessible India for Wheel-Chair bound

Raghu and I left their home in Redhills last night, with a mixed feelings after giving her the new wheel chair.   We felt so heavy in heart and same time felt so happy to see such a compassion and warmth and positivist in this brave-heart.  Thanks to my blogger friend Guru for sponsoring the Wheel Chair and also to my friends in Inner Wheel for support to get her scooter ready.

Yes, I am a simple girl, my daddy’s little girl
He gave me wings to fly, not knowing he should spy

I dream to shine, believe in people, share my dreams
Trusting the other gender, silently and sincerely without qualms

I ventured out, making new friends and networking
Not understanding the brutal underground systems working

Looks can be deceptive and words can be manipulated
In the name of friendship, love and care and what not!

When I extended my little hands in search of friendship
I did not know for sure, the big shadow of a cruel perpetrator

My simple dream not just broken but tarnished for ever
The small moments of pleasure became a bane for life

Veils of perverseness of the man I believed to be a friend
Brought upon me a tragedy to unveil and an emotional end

I cried in pain, for rescue, for help and for solace

The ‘trusted’ friend with his gang of ‘trusted’ friends
Ended up treating me like a meat as I ventured onto meet!

I ended up in shame and disgust, physical and emotional pain
Media wants to show my face and give a name, and blame

Victim blaming, victim shaming, and victim destroy
Unfortunately, Is not new in this country of mine,

STOP, this game, please for heaven’s sake and hell’s end
All I did was to put my trust and go along with a friend!

Oh Mothers!  Out there!  Please feed your sons with food for thought
That ‘woman’ is not a sex toy, but a soul with blood and flesh

We are young, and we too have a dream and a life out there
Beyond this tragedy, let us live in some left out grace

Social Media fanatics – Stop searching for who we are!
We are someone’s sister, some dad’s daughter, even a teacher!

System - Refine yourself, before you advice on what we need to do!
Our families and friends can take care of us for true!
