Tributes to the loss of my loved ones- Dec 2021

2021 had been very tough year to many of us. We have lost precious souls around...many friends, relatives, neighbours and collegues who were with us at beginning of the year now remain most precious memories...due to covid, illness, age etc..some losses have disturbed us to an extent that it will take time to revive to old selves....to all those surviving such thoughts, stay strong and with comfort that our dear ones are in better place out of human sufferings...Dec had been cruel with 4 of my loved ones going one after the other especially Sreesaran Saran Sridevi, my uncle Ragupati Saidapet , my teacher Srinivasarao Vella , my opp house uncle Sri Ramanujam uncle who used to keep a close watch on us always as wellwisher... probably making me fall sick...but I will rejoice the moments I celebrated with them in life and carry their blessings and feel well soon as all 4 will not like me sulking ...wishing 2022 a better year.....

Gremaltes Hospital - Golden Jubiliee Celebration and recognition of the good samaritans - 18 Dec 2021

"Leprosy is curable" .."National Leprosy Eradication Programme"..1983 Cricket team support Leprosy Foundation for cure and prevention.....we grew up with such campaigns during 80's and 90's when lepers were treated as untouchables and shunned by society. Though the disease is now slowly fading, the stigma associated to it is still a reality. Raghu and I had our biggest lesson during pandemic when we went into Balarampuram Leprosy Colony in Villivakkam, with a truck load of rations on request of Dr Renuka Ramakrishnan and on financial support from Maatram Foundation Sujith Kumar . They treated us with humbleness and deepest gratitude as they hardly had support during pandemic. 95 houses secluded from the heart of city, having their own way of life, their younger generations are struggling to find a new recognition.

"The string emits fragrance along with the flowers"... t

oday was such an experience when we were invited to Golden Jubilee celebration of German Hospital Gremaltes Hospital which is doing free Leprosy treatment for last 50 years in Shenoy Nagar Chennai..Renuka Ramakrishnan Doctor was honoured with several other doctors, nurses, pharma and para medical institutions, several social workers, field workers and few patients in a beautiful function held at @Union Christian Association Paramedical College campus in chetpet and I was also felicitated for our little contribution during the covid times ... Thank you Dr Renuka Ramakrishnan for taking me along in your service support and also recognitions galore....There is lot more work to do to make India Leprosy Free Nation...Sandhya Subramanian and family do support the Leprosy village in Vellore every year and I feel grateful when we can send torn cotton sarees and socks they need.
God ....please make this world a disease free space, free from pain and stigma🙏🙏🙏😘

Tribute to my uncle : Saidapet Raghupati - 15 Nov 1934 - 15 Dec 2021 ( Om Shanthi)

A life well lived... exact thought as we bid adieu to our grand old uncle in the family.. my favorite Jaya attai (aunt)'s husband and my go to uncle Ragupati Saidapet... we were eagerly waiting to celebrate his 90th birthday next year..but God had different plans!

'My little Monkey Girl'....this is how he used to tease me, as I believe I climbed on his shoulders when I was 3 years old....'Chatter box of the family'...the title I got from them..... we used to share stories of the days he worked as a Senior Bureaucrat in NTR regime in Andhra Secretariat.    A man of high integrity and simplicity, very soft spoken and very close to the family.   His 2 daughters MadhuLatha Saidapet and Asha Latha are his two eyes....he adored his wife till the end.. setting us strong couple goals in the family 🙂

Dance, Music,  Studies, Tuitions, Students,  Nice food, movies, Holi celebrations, holidays in Hyderabad,  their trips to Eluru,  they were a beautiful package of love and affection that a peaceful family needs.   It was very depressing to see my aunt sulking after he went into his final sleep yesterday morning as we saw them together for more than 5 decades....

He stood rock behind me during my dad's funeral and today, when Yamini Krishnan and I saw him on his final journey,  our hearts ached in pain.   My aunt and uncle were the one's who did kanyadanam over our wedding and Raghunath AnandaBabu is ever grateful and he felt it his responsibility to stand with the family at this hour of crisis.

"Smile is the man"  - very soft, ever smiling, full of wit and fun, no great materialistic goals,  but peaceful, doing yoga every day, eating right,  sleeping on time, taking utmost care of his family...he was a complete man.  There are very few who influence you by their actions more than words and he was definitely one in our family.

Losing 2 important people in last 2 weeks is not easy on me, but here is a life that is well lived and need to be celebrated for the beautiful memories he left behind.   We will miss you Mammya...but truly wish we can live atleast 50% of the way you lived...Love you and keep smiling in heavens!!!

Tributes to B. Sridevi - my childhood best friend (28 Jul 1977 - 5 Dec 2021 ) Om Shanthi

Tears rolling down as I bid farewell to my best friend from my childhood....

This is the story of 2 best friends who first met at the age of 4...both families being neighbours, and grandmothers who raised were friends, it was natural for the little girls to become instant friends...the twist to the story is everyday was a fight, fight for first bench, for standing first row in Marchfast or even to pick the lunch boxes n find best spot under the tree for lunch....the next 12 years was a superficial journey of competitive peer pressure, as this girl became an athelete, best class leader, then SPL of our batch and head girl in mock parliament...she used to feel her ego boosted every time she won over me.  She was my dad's favourite of my friends and always used to say, your dad loves me more than you...irritating me... probably she was true and thats the reason, he called her first to heavens.

At age 44, she leaves behind two small children, boy who is 14 and girl 11 and husband n siblings heartbroken.

She leaves behind this friend of hers feeling suddenly lonely and lost the biggest connect with her childhood, my hometown and my dad.   I feel so lost and numb

Thanks to my family, who are standing with me in this times of stillness and Raghu for coming along with me to see her one last time.   This time I will not hear her witty loud voice irritating me.   A teacher who was so hardworking leaves behind impressions that are hard to erase.   She did not have an easy life.

Last one year her physical body was ravaged with cancer but it could never dampen her spirit.   She was loud n clear till she slipped into her final sleep.

Wish we laughed more,. Wish we both had easy lives, we were together holding hands and raising our kids but truly wish she was there to see her children blossom.

Yes Sridevi,. Thank you for being the finest part of my childhood and fairest part of my entire life.   I have many friends, but none who will take me granted like you fighter.   Go and rest now....you played your game well and even in this fight, it is me who lost ...Good Bye Angel ...be the tough girl you were and rule the heavens above ❤️😢

In memory of Balina Sridevi Srinivas Sreesaran Saran  28.07.1977 - 05.12.2021

Remembering and Celebrating the precious friendship I shared...

Every bit of my childhood is filled with your beautiful memories. Truly love you and miss you Sridevi. Thank you for the great friendship you gave me❤️🌹❤️😘😢

Tips for Financial Planning And Safety during Pandemic

The last 1.5 years since beginning of 2020 had been an extremely difficult time for people all over the world.   Pandemic did not spare anyone.   Rich, poor, religion, creed,  haves, have-nots, white, black, brown...nothing -  the Corona virus impacted everyone equally.   Unfortunately,  it did effect the economically struggling class more rapidly than others who fortunately could avail medical facilities with insurance, investments or personal savings.

This pandemic had been a great eye opener for all of us and it is very important wake up call to address emergencies not just this one, but anything going forward.  However, handling the crisis and managing emergencies for many during the last many months, have made me repeatedly emphasis on adequate financial planning and staying safe during these unprecedented times.

Here are few of the learnings that I would like to share:

Using Digital banking for all financial needs

It may sound silly, but cash had been the biggest carrier of the contagious virus and carrier during the times of Corona crisis as it changes hands quite rapidly.   The risk of contamination is very high when it comes to handling cash for transactions.    Using internet banking, online tools like PayTM, GPay, Pockets is effecting for goods and transactions from the comfort of our homes and staying safe during pandemic

Adequate Health Insurance

It is very important that we have enough insurance coverage to handle crisis during this pandemic.  It is very important to have sufficient medical insurance cover for you and your family to safeguard your financial state in case of a medical emergency and also to avail required medical facilities.  Having the details of the insurance card,  government provided medical insurance using Aadhar Card and company id card and manager / insurance desk contact numbers handy and informed to all members in the family is a must.   Take Top-up cover in case you have any morbid conditions that may require additional medical support

Life insurance Details

Indians especially have this mind-block when it comes to talking about death and planning in case we are gone.  It is very important that the family should not suffer financially when the emotional and physical trauma of a bereavement is there in the family.   So insurance policy details and insurance helpline numbers,  agent details, and original policy documents available place details should be shared with all the family members.   Life insurance is the biggest protection to the family even after we are gone

Nomination Details

Many times, we are so selfish that we fail to update and keep track of the nomination details to our holdings, be it bank accounts, lockers, insurance policies,  investments, shares, trade documents or planning of WILL for our immovable assets like buildings, farms and houses.   The struggle of the legal heirs is unimaginable when the nomination details are not updated for these investments.  So it is important to update nomination, keep a copy of the investments and keep your family or the nominee informed with the legal documents so claims become easy for them when the situation happens

Emergency Funds

Many of us in the rat race for survival forget to keep aside funds to manage unpredicted emergencies.  There should be funds kept aside to manage anywhere from 3 to 6 months during the crisis,  In case of any incapacitation due to Covid or any disease or loss of job due to the economic splurge that is happening, these funds will help you meet the basic needs of survival of your family and opportunity to bounce back both physically and financially without losing confidence

Being ALERT is Important

It is very important that we stay alert of the fraudsters on Internet during this pandemic.   Having very unpredictable passwords only known to family is important for all online login ids and also it is very important to have an add-on debit card in the name of a spouse or a child for handling emergency.  It is also important that you keep your ATM Pins and cards safe and ensure you key in 000 after you finish you withdrawals in ATM to ensure the keypad don't record your PIN.

Do not share your passwords or PINs to anyone on phone/ email or calls / google docs/ links/  or to even to those who claim are from Bank, Insurance company, Govt or IT agency / RBI/ Covid care centers or even if some personifies like a relative or friend. Or tries to create a panic situation where you share everything in emotional vulnerability times.  Do not transfer money in those panic situations especially to any individual accounts.   Being ALERT is important not to end up bankrupt

Stay Home!  Stay Safe!  Stay Secure!!!

Microaggressions - How it impacts our Work culture and thought process and perspectives ?

Very recently I attended a session on microaggressions and that’s when I realized that I have been facing this all my life …nothing but triggers that challenge our emotional balance.

It is time that we

Feel empowered to identify and challenge microaggressions to improve our culture

Identify your own unconscious bias

Be empowered to help shape the culture you want

 Microaggressions in the workplace

Microaggressions are everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to people based solely upon being members of a marginalized group

Bias in Actions & Words

 Some Shared Experiences

“I don’t plan to have any children because My husband and I are very ambitious”

My female manager, when I was first pregnant

“You are the only female member of the team. Please take charge of all birthday celebrations of the team members since you would manage it so much better!”

One of my female managers

“Your husband is a banker – so I need to allocate more increments to those who need to manage in one salary.”

My first direct manager (Male)

“I thought being a female at least you would not be so aggressive and pushy about asking for salary increases”

One of my female managers in AsiaImpact matters more than intent:

How do Microaggressions impact team members

Statements couched as compliments or harmless comments. The recipients may initially feel that they are not entitled to an emotional reaction and may have the following thought process….

       Did I interpret that correctly?

Did she say what I think she said?

What did he mean by that?

       Should I say something?

Saying something may make it worse.

       They’ll probably think I’m overreacting.

Speaking up is going to hurt more than it helps

Impact matters more than intent:

       Anxiety

       Depression

       Sleep difficulties

       Diminished confidence

       Helplessness

       Loss of drive

       Internal dilemma

What are the potential impacts of unchecked  micro aggressions on an organization’s culture?

Cultural effects:

Bad behaviors get normalized - specially when others observe and do not see any checks

It makes new or introverted people to clam up and not speak out  - which could translate to hiding bigger leadership behavioral aggression being unchecked

Toxic culture in teams, lack of collaboration and trust

People hesitate to bring their authentic self to work

Negative tangible outcomes impacting bottom line:

       Low Engagement Rate

       Low Productivity

       Low Performance

       Low morale

       Loss of good talent

Bad reputation as a place to work

What if you are the Microaggressor?

Some positive approaches

Do Make the other person feel heard and follow their lead in the conversation.

Offer a genuine apology that acknowledges the impact and harm your comment caused.

Keep striving to be better. It requires grace, humility, and commitment.

Some unproductive approaches

Fall prey to the fundamental attribution error. You can still be a good, well-intentioned person who said something offensive.

Make the conversation about you. Instead, express gratitude for your colleague’s trust and belief that you’re capable of evolving.

Overdo your apology by laying on your privileged guilt. Your apology should be sincere.

Ask yourself -

What was the Impact of My statement ?

What was my intention when making this statement ?

How to Respond to a Microaggression

Three Approaches:

1. Let it go. This can often be the easiest solution but comes with an emotional tax, of not speaking up for yourself, and others, and it reinforces the behavior is OK.

2. Respond immediately. This approach addresses the situation but can be risky, impacting how you are seen, and impacting others and the overall culture.

3. Respond Later. Sleep on it. Get perspective. Strategically respond. Create a tempered approach, privately. Log it with HR and others, as well as directly to the person.

How?

Discern – how important is this? To you? Your feelings & others? How do you want to be perceived?

Disarm – prepare them to be uncomfortable for the discussion.

Defy–  Challenge them to explain exactly what they meant vs your interpreation.

Decide–  Your feelings, your reaction are yours to decide.
